WHO WE ARE

The TCIC New Immigrant Support Centre (TCIC NISC) is dedicated to facilitating the seamless transition and settlement of new immigrants into Canada. Recognizing the challenges and uncertainties inherent in relocating to a new nation, TCIC NISC aims to provide comprehensive support to immigrants, enabling them to navigate their new environment with ease and integrate into society seamlessly. This draft document outlines the purpose, scope, operational guidelines, and specific processes of TCIC NISC to achieve its objectives effectively.
 

OUR MANDATE

The primary purpose of TCIC NISC is to provide essential support services to new immigrants into Canada, facilitating their settlement process and empowering them to thrive in their new environment. By offering assistance with practical matters such as documentation, accommodation, employment, and community integration, TCIC NISC aims to alleviate the initial challenges faced by immigrants and promote their successful integration into society.
 

FOCUS

TCIC NISC’s scope encompasses a range of services designed to address the diverse needs of new immigrants. The key areas of focus include:
  • Reception and Interface: Welcoming new immigrants and providing initial assistance, which may include arranging airport pick-up and facilitating their transition into the community.
  • Documentation Assistance: Offering assistance with completing applications for SIN, health card processing, opening bank accounts, children’s school registration, and registry services support.
  • Temporary Accommodation and Food Provision: Providing temporary housing and food supplies to immigrants upon their arrival, ensuring they have a safe and comfortable environment as they settle into their new surroundings.
  • Employment Support: Assisting immigrants with resume writing, job searches, career counseling, and understanding employment opportunities and requirements in the local job market.
  • Community Integration: Facilitating connections with local community resources, services, and support networks to foster a sense of belonging and inclusion.
 

GUIDELINES

TCIC NISC operates based on the following guiding principles:
  • Accessibility: Services provided by TCIC NISC are accessible to all new immigrants, regardless of background, nationality, or circumstances.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: TCIC NISC respects and values the diversity of immigrant communities, ensuring services are delivered with cultural sensitivity and understanding.
  • Collaboration: TCIC NISC collaborates with government agencies, community organizations, and other stakeholders to leverage resources and maximize support for immigrants.
  • Empowerment: TCIC NISC empowers immigrants by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to navigate their settlement process independently.
  • Continuous Improvement: TCIC NISC regularly evaluates its services and processes to identify areas for improvement and enhance the quality and effectiveness of its support services.
 

SPECIFIC PROCESSES

a. Reception and Interface
  • Assign designated volunteers or staff members to greet immigrants upon their arrival.
  • Provide immigrants with welcome packages containing essential information, contact details, and resources.
  • Arrange transportation from the airport to temporary accommodation if needed.
b. Documentation Assistance
  • Offer assistance with completing applications for SIN, health card processing, opening bank accounts, children’s school registration, and registry services support.
  • Provide guidance on required documentation and eligibility criteria.
  • Facilitate appointments and accompany immigrants to relevant government offices if necessary.
c. Temporary Accommodation and Food Provision
  • Maintain partnerships with local hotels, hostels, or temporary housing providers to secure accommodation for immigrants.
  • Coordinate food provisions through partnerships with The Guiding Light Ministry.
  • Ensure temporary accommodation meets basic hygiene and safety standards.
d. Employment Support
  • Conduct orientation sessions on the local job market, employment laws, and cultural norms.
  • Offer resume writing workshops, career counseling, and individualized assistance with resume development.
  • Provide job search resources, including job boards, networking opportunities, and employment agencies.
e. Community Integration
  • Organize cultural orientation sessions to familiarize immigrants with local customs, traditions, and community resources.
  • Facilitate connections with language classes, cultural events, and social groups to promote community engagement.
  • Establish mentorship programs pairing immigrants with established community members to provide guidance and support.
 

TRAINING & CAPACITY BUILDING

TCIC NISC offers training support for new immigrants to enhance their skills and capacity for success. Training programs include:
  • English Literacy – English as a Second Language (ESL): Providing language classes to improve communication skills and facilitate integration into Canadian society.
  • Personal Finance Workshop: Offering workshops to educate immigrants on managing finances, budgeting, and financial planning.
  • Basic Computer Literacy: Providing training on basic computer skills to empower immigrants to access online resources and navigate digital platforms effectively.
  • Other Marketable Skills Acquisition: Offering training programs to develop additional skills that are in demand in the local job market.
